Two bodies have been recovered from the rubble of the collapsed Elite 5-Star Hostel in Amaokpala, near Federal Polytechnic Oko, Orumba North LGA, Anambra State. The 60-room building caved in on Sunday night, July 26, 2026. One of the victims has been identified as Vivian Chinedum, a baker and fresh graduate of Food Science and Technology, FPO. According to ABS, Vivian moved into the hostel in March 2026.
Survivors said there were warning signs before the collapse. Grace Nweke, who moved in January, said a food vendor alerted residents on their WhatsApp group around 10pm that the walls were cracking. Moments later, they heard loud cracking sounds and ran out for their lives. Grace said she had no idea the building was unsafe until that night.
What’s more heartbreaking is that occupants said they later learnt that previous tenants were allegedly told to vacate because of the building’s condition, but the caretaker still went ahead to rent it to unsuspecting students.
Please, let this be a wake-up call to landlords, school authorities, and government agencies to prioritize student safety.
