Content creator Ezema Kelechi Henry, known online as Kelwizzy, was detained after weeks of road-condition videos in Nsukka, but accounts of what happened, and why, diverge sharply.
Nsukka — The detention of social media commentator Ezema Kelechi Henry, popularly known as Kelwizzy, has become a flashpoint in Nsukka, with starkly different accounts emerging over what led to his arrest and how it was carried out.
Kelwizzy had spent recent weeks posting videos highlighting poor road conditions across Nsukka Local Government Area, drawing significant public engagement and commendation from residents frustrated by infrastructure gaps.
The Disputed Video
According to accounts sympathetic to local government officials, tension began after Kelwizzy released a video alleging that a stretch of road, variously identified as Mechanic Village Road, Ugwuechara Road, or Enyihuchiri Road, at Barracks Junction, was being constructed by a private philanthropist, despite the site reportedly bearing a signboard identifying it as a state government project. That account further alleges Kelwizzy claimed government officials had chased the philanthropist off the site.
Government-aligned sources say Kelwizzy was approached and asked to retract the video on grounds that it misrepresented the facts and he declined. The dispute reportedly took a personal turn after Kelwizzy, who shares a home community, Amaji Umakashi, with the Nsukka Council Chairman, filmed a follow-up video criticizing a 4.2-kilometer road project the chairman was constructing there, alleging the chairman had received billions in allocations without completing the road.
That account also states Kelwizzy did not mention other local projects attributed to the chairman, including a new borehole and the distribution of 500KVA transformers to the community, and that a subsequent video on August 1, in which Kelwizzy accused one of his own brothers of bias and alleged threats to his life, this preceded his arrest on charges of disseminating false information.
Independent Reports Describe Abduction and Assault
However, this account differs sharply from reporting by independent outlets Sahara Reporters and the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), which describe events surrounding Kelwizzy’s detention in far more serious terms.
According to Sahara Reporters, citing Kelwizzy’s family and residents, he was dragged from his home on August 5, beaten, and handed over to police. His brother told the outlet that men who identified themselves as neighbourhood watch operatives contacted Kelwizzy under the pretext of filming a paid birthday shout-out, a service he regularly advertised and that he willingly gave them his address. When the men arrived, they allegedly ordered him outside, beat him, and forced him into a vehicle, according to the Nigerian Observatory for Human Rights (NOHR).
FIJ reported that Kelwizzy, whom it identified as a “community activist”, was “beaten to a state of stupor by state-backed thugs” before being detained at the Nsukka Police Command, citing a lawyer, Malachy Odo, who spoke publicly about the incident. As of FIJ’s reporting, the Enugu State Police had not issued a statement addressing the arrest or the alleged assault.
FIJ also reported that Nsukka LGA received at least ₦2.1 billion in FAAC allocations over a three-month period this year — ₦750 million in January, ₦725 million in February, and ₦637 million in March — and ₦7.9 billion for the whole of 2025, context the outlet presented alongside residents’ continued complaints about road conditions.
Two Narratives, One Ongoing Case
The gap between these accounts is significant. One version frames Kelwizzy’s arrest as a consequence of knowingly spreading false claims about a government project, following repeated warnings. The other frames it as the violent suppression of a community activist who had been drawing attention to poor infrastructure despite substantial government funding, with the manner of his detention itself raising serious human rights concerns.
Both cannot be fully reconciled without further clarity, including an official statement from the Enugu State Police Command, court proceedings related to the charges reportedly filed against Kelwizzy, and Kelwizzy’s own account of events, none of which were available in the sources reviewed for this report.
